Hoograven Invites You!

Theoretical model of a social practice, consisting of an exhibition, symposium and resident meeting.
The exhibition in the Pastoe Factory in Hoograven presented analyses and visualisations and challenges visitors to join in thinking about the significance of social design for urban development.

Local authorities, housing corporations and residents are wrestling with the legacy of the post-war building boom in all kinds of places in the Netherlands. Neighbourhoods that once embodied the promise of social harmony and individual fulfilment are by now suffering from impoverishment and disintegration. Demolition followed by the construction of modern new buildings seems to be the only remedy. But is this tabula rasa model really the ultimate strategy? Or are there alternatives that do more justice to the social ambitions of the original design?... more

Op allerlei plaatsen in Nederland worstelen bestuurders en bewoners met de erfenis van de naoorlogse bouwhausse. Wijken die ooit de belofte van sociale harmonie en individuele ontplooiing belichaamden lijden inmiddels onder verpaupering en desintegratie. Sloop, gevolgd door eigentijdse nieuwbouw, lijkt de enige remedie. Maar is dit tabula rasa-model werkelijk de ultieme strategie? Of zijn er alternatieven die meer recht doen aan de sociale ambities van het oorspronkelijke ontwerp?

Perfect Day (Neeltje Ten Westenend icw Henriette Waal)

The ‘Hoograven Invites You’ is part of Utrecht Manifest in which the Hoograven district in Utrecht plays a central role. With the exhibition United Minds in the Pastoe Factory, Urban Think Tank, headed by architects A.Brillembourg and H.Klumpner, shows various proposals for the future of this district which is the outcome of an intensive dialogue with a variety of persons involved and not in the least the residents themselves. The issues about Hoograven are not unique, and can be recognized at other places in and outside Utrecht, like in the Overvecht district.... more

Hoograven Symposium (including report)

The symposium challenged existing policies of (state-led) gentrification in urban regeneration areas. These policies add to the existing fragmentation by bringing in new isolated pockets, eradicate the vernacular that is slowly developing from the present occupation, and ignore the need to redefine the relation between public and private space.


The challenge is to use imaginative design as a vehicle to reconsider everyday urban practices and to create alternative visions for urban redevelopment, starting from the understanding of the vulnerability and resilience of communities and of the unseen qualities of the area. The next step is to activate and support these communities in improving their quality of life.... more
