MODERNISMTODAY - Symposium
Donderdag 21 oktober organiseert MODERNISMTODAY in De Pastoe Fabriek te Utrecht een symposium over de renovatie- en / of transformatiemogelijkheden van Rietveld’s nalatenschap en van zijn sociale woningbouwprojecten in Hoograven in het bijzonder.
Utrecht Manifest verkent de ontwikkeling van de hedendaagse vormgeving vanuit een politiek-maatschappelijke dimensie. Hierbij geldt het modernisme van begin vorige eeuw, waarvan de Utrechtse architect/ontwerper Gerrit Rietveld een boegbeeld was, als inspiratie. Hoewel de relevantie van design voor samenleving en economie de afgelopen jaren steeds meer aandacht krijgt, is de verbinding tussen het culturele werkterrein en dat van de alledaagse maatschappij vooralsnog allerminst vanzelfsprekend.
Een belangrijk onderdeel van ‘Utrecht Manifest 2009, 3e biënnale voor social design’ betrof ‘Hoograven Invites You!’, een research project in social urban design waarbij onderzoek werd gedaan naar de ontwikkelingsmogelijkheden van de Utrechtse wijk Hoograven. Deze wijk heeft de enige sociale woningbouw ontworpen door Gerrit Rietveld. De gebouwen zijn verdeeld in 3 groepen, zogenaamde stempels, van elk 194 woningen. Één stempel is reeds in de originele staat teruggebracht, de andere twee moeten nog worden aangepakt.

Thursday October 21st MODERNISMTODAY will organize a symposium in De Pastoe Fabriek, Utrecht about renovation- and / or transformation of Rietveld’s social housing projects in Hoograven.
Utrecht Manifest explores the development of contemporary design from a socio-political perspective. This also applies to Modernism from the beginning of the last century – of which Utrecht-born architect/designer Gerrit Rietveld was a figurehead; a sort of leitmotif. Although the relevance of design for society and the economy over previous years is getting more attention, the link between the cultural sphere and that of everyday society is, at the moment, not obvious.
An integral part of Utrecht Manifest 2009 was Hoograven Invites You, a research project on Social Urban Design under the direction of architect Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner. For this, an investigation was carried out into the development opportunities of the Utrecht district of Hoograven; the only area to contain social housing that Gerrit Rietveld designed. The buildings are divided into three groups, so-called repetitive blocks [‘stempels’] of 194 dwellings each. One block has already been restored to its original state and the other two are awaiting reconstruction.
This symposium looks at the renovation and/or remodelling possibilities of Rietveld’s legacy in general, in particular on his social housing project in Hoograven.
Kenneth Frampton (Columbia University, New York) is well known for his writing on twentieth-century architecture, and on Modernism in particular. To what extent is this still a source of inspiration for present-day architects and what are the chances of survival of post-war functionalistic building production?
Being an architect, a teacher and a researcher, Hubert-Jan Henket is thoroughly involved in the heritage of the Modern Movement. The Chairman of the Rietveld-Schröderhuis Foundation and Rietveld Archives will speak about the meaning of this cultural heritage for the future.
Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner are closely involved in the creation of ideas about Hoograven. Transformation is a central idea for the Venezuelan architects. Even the Rietveld legacy in Hoograven can’t ignore that.
